Rally Redux

Well, yesterday, I said we’d be leaving the boat in Cocoa Village until January. However, we really didn’t like the idea of letting the week go by without making some miles. So last night, we hatched a plan. We had an interesting conversation with Dinner Key Marina, and learned that they would happily rent us a mooring ball – even if we don’t arrive with a boat, provided we show up to their office in person. So that’s what we did. We rented a car, got up at 4:30am and headed to Miami. It took about 6 hours to drive there and back.

From a car, Florida looked like this.

But, we made it there, and we got our mooring ball. While we were there, we also rented mooring balls for two other rally members. They weren’t there to sign a contract, and their credit cards weren’t on hand for payments. But none of that seemed to matter. Now, you may be asking yourself, “Wait, if they are happy to rent balls for two people who weren’t there, why couldn’t the whole thing have been done over the phone?” Good question! It’s one I certainly asked them several times before driving down there. But even after spending an hour there today, I cannot account for it. As far as I can tell, there is no reason at all. Their processes and policies seem to support phone sales. It seems like the smallest of mental leaps. But somehow, the fine people of Dinner Key just couldn’t even imagine making that leap.

Anyways, we are back at the boat now, ready to push off tomorrow for Vero Beach.
